Hi Friend,
A few times each week I drive by a sign whose message is unavoidable, not only for its location along my route, but also for the bright red letters against the stark white background that delivers the obnoxious message, “In Science Lives Hope”. Obnoxious is not too strong a word, given that the world is in the middle of a pandemic created in a science laboratory. Worse yet, there is enough credible evidence to arouse suspicion that the virus was intentionally altered by “scientists” for possible use as an agent of biological warfare.
Maybe the most fear-inducing factor of our age is the nuclear bomb that could exterminate all human life. The EMP—an electromagnetic pulse—could disable all electrical components within a given radius, maybe a city the size of New York. What if one of the major cities of the U.S. lost all power for weeks?
Those are frightening prospects. Many of us remember the bomb drills in school where students practiced falling on the floor and hiding under their desks in the event of a nuclear attack—even during science class. We didn’t have “hope” in science—we were afraid of it.
Then there was Josef Mengele, a scientist, who performed gruesome experiments on children to improve his scientific understanding. We forget about the complicity of the medical profession in America in these barbaric experiments.
Military weapons that threaten the existence of mankind were ALL created by scientists, from the time that man first sharpened an arrowhead to attack his enemy.
We trusted in science to protect us from coronavirus. Remember, it was going to be 15 days of mask wearing to conquer the disease.
Then there are the scientists that want to protect us from global warming. More than one of the experts would like to change the orbit of the earth to move us farther from the sun. Science has the technology to make it possible.
Am I a religious fanatic to trust God with the orbit of the planets? When Job questioned the wisdom of God he was called to answer for his arrogance. Let the scientists answer to God as Job did.
4 “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Tell Me, if you have understanding.
5 Who determined its measurements?
6 To what were its foundations fastened?
Or who laid its cornerstone,
(Job 38:4-6)
Is there hope for America? I think so, but not in science. When Hezekiah was King of Judah, it was attacked by Sennacherib, King of Assyria, who led the strongest military force on earth. Judah was about to be annihilated, so Hezekiah went into his bedroom and prayed to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. That night an Angel of the Lord swept through the Assyrian camp and killed 185,000 soldiers. Judah was saved by God.
When the Israelites were fleeing from Egyptian soldiers bent on killing them, the Red Sea parted so Israel could pass through. It wasn’t science that parted the waters—or closed the waters to drown the Egyptian soldiers. God was their savior.
Neither Hezekiah nor Moses trusted in science—their salvation came from God, in whom they trusted.
Science cannot change the heart of a man or provide national leaders with wisdom to govern a nation or prevent a war. If science could do that, war would never have occurred. The reality is, that the more knowledge science provides, the more dangerous the world becomes.
Science has never saved a marriage—or made a man love his wife and children. It has never turned a terrorist into a peace-loving philanthropist or caused a criminal to repent of his crimes. God has done all those things millions of times over.
Most important, science has never forgiven a man of sin or offered to pay the penalty for transgressions. The hospital sign should read, In Jesus Christ Lives Hope.
Until next time,
Jim O’Brien
